Clean a room

DIY

Start with the right cleaner

Match the product to the surface. More products do not mean a better clean.

When: Each cleaning session

Steps & safety limits
  1. Read the cleaner label and the surface’s care instructions.
  2. Use the ventilation and protective equipment specified on the label.
  3. Never mix cleaning products, especially bleach with ammonia or acids such as vinegar.
  4. Close products in their original labelled containers and keep them away from children.

No homemade mixtures. If the surface instructions and cleaner label disagree, choose another suitable product.

Keep bathrooms dry

Use ventilation and act on unexplained dampness.

When: After wet use

Steps & safety limits
  1. Use the bathroom exhaust fan during a bath or shower. Health Canada recommends at least 30 minutes afterward.
  2. Dry wet shower and tub surfaces after use.
  3. Watch safely accessible areas for leaks, stains or condensation; arrange prompt leak repair.

Recurring or hidden mould and unclear moisture sources need professional assessment. This is prevention, not mould-removal or flood-cleanup instructions.

Wash dishes

DIY

Wash dishes by hand

Scrape, wash, rinse, then air-dry.

When: After use

Steps & safety limits
  1. Check dish and cookware care instructions before washing or soaking.
  2. Scrape off food. Keep cooking oil and grease out of the drain; follow local disposal guidance.
  3. Wash with hand-dishwashing liquid as directed, using a suitable non-damaging cleaning tool.
  4. Rinse all surfaces, air-dry in a clean rack, then clean the sink and strainer.

Special cookware needs its own care. During a water advisory, follow local public-health instructions instead.

Model-specific

Load the dishwasher

Give the water room to reach your dishes.

When: Each load

Steps & safety limits
  1. Check what is dishwasher-safe and follow your machine’s rack layout.
  2. Scrape off large food debris. Bosch’s guide says its machines do not need dishes pre-rinsed; check your own manual.
  3. Leave space between items and keep the spray arms and detergent dispenser unobstructed.
  4. Use automatic-dishwasher detergent as directed, never hand-dishwashing liquid.

Dish, detergent and machine instructions all matter. A care label overrides a generic loading tip.

Care for appliances

Model-specific

Check dishwasher care

Find the exact model’s maintenance instructions before removing parts.

When: Follow your manual

Steps & safety limits
  1. Find the maintenance section in the exact model’s official manual.
  2. Clean only owner-serviceable filters or parts, using its instructions.
  3. Refit parts correctly before operation. Follow model guidance for cleaning products and descaling.

No universal cleaning interval: water hardness and use vary. Leave leaks, persistent faults, pump, wiring and plumbing work to qualified service.

Clear the dryer lint screen

A small task after each load.

When: After each load

Steps & safety limits
  1. Inspect and clean the lint screen after each load, following your dryer’s instructions.
  2. Do not run a dryer with a missing, damaged or clogged lint filter.
  3. Keep the area clear of items that can burn. Turn the dryer off before leaving home or going to bed.

Ducts, inaccessible vents and cabinet servicing need the appropriate professional. Ventless dryers have model-specific care too; this is not an installation guide.

Seasonal essentials

DIY test · model-specific

Test smoke and CO alarms

Make a monthly check using each alarm’s own instructions.

When: Monthly

Steps & safety limits
  1. Follow manufacturer instructions to test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly.
  2. Learn the difference between an emergency alarm, low battery and end-of-life signals from the manual.
  3. Follow the model’s replacement guidance. Check the current Ontario guidance for placement and applicability.

A checkmark is not a safety certification. Ontario CO requirements changed in January 2026; use the official guidance below, not an old bedroom-only checklist.

Get ready for wet and cold weather

Check drainage from the ground and plan heating care.

When: Seasonal planning

Steps & safety limits
  1. From a safe ground-level position, look for missing or damaged downspouts and water collecting near the home.
  2. Arrange clearing or repair of blocked drainage; do not climb onto a roof or use this guide for ladder work.
  3. TSSA recommends annual inspection of fuel-burning appliances by a qualified professional.
  4. Use the exact equipment manual for filter and ventilation maintenance.

Seasonal planning is not a universal service schedule. Gas, electrical, structural, roof and inaccessible work belong to qualified professionals.

Find supplies & materials

Browse official Canadian store categories and compare options. These are starting points, not endorsements. Check current prices, stock and delivery with the retailer; SubeR does not check them.

Cleaning & dishwasher care

Choose products for the surface or exact appliance. Cleaner is not the same as dishwasher detergent.

Dryer parts & alarms

Confirm the exact model, part number and compatibility before buying. Parts listings are not DIY installation instructions; alarm selection must follow current guidance.

Weather sealing materials

Compare dimensions, materials and the door or window maker’s instructions. This is not advice to seal ventilation openings.
