WORKSHEET / EDUCATIONAL SCENARIO

Compound-growth scenario

Explore a fixed annual rate and contributions made at each year-end.

HYPOTHETICAL EXAMPLE1,0001,1001,210StartYear 1Year 2
Hypothetical, not a forecast: 1,000 → 1,100 → 1,210 at 10%, no contributions.
Method & limits

For each year: balance = previous balance × (1 + rate ÷ 100) + contribution. Contributions are added at year-end. No fees, taxes, withdrawals or inflation are included. Rates can be negative, down to −100%. Constant returns are hypothetical; actual returns vary and can be negative. No rate is recommended. Annual balances are not rounded; final displays round to cents.

WORKSHEET / EDUCATIONAL SCENARIO

Purchasing-power scenario

See both directions of an inflation assumption, using the same starting amount.

HYPOTHETICAL EXAMPLE100CAD90.91 today100 received later110 laterMatches 100 today
Hypothetical 10% for 1 year: 100 future → 90.91 today; 100 today → 110 future.
Method & limits

Today’s value of that future amount = amount ÷ (1 + inflation ÷ 100)^years. Future amount with today’s purchasing power = amount × (1 + inflation ÷ 100)^years. A fixed-rate illustration, not a current inflation reading or forecast. Rate must be greater than −100%. Intermediate values are not rounded; final displays round to cents.

WORKSHEET / EDUCATIONAL SCENARIO

Annual-fee comparison

Compare two hypothetical percentage fees under identical growth assumptions.

HYPOTHETICAL EXAMPLEFee A · 1%990 CADFee B · 2%980 CADDifference: 10 CAD
Hypothetical: 1,000 CAD, 0% growth, 1 year; fee A 1%, fee B 2%.
Method & limits

For each year: grow the balance by the assumed gross rate, then deduct the annual fee as a percentage of that post-growth balance. No contributions, withdrawals, fixed charges, taxes or other fees. A minus B is the ending-balance difference. Real fee timing and fee bases vary. Annual balances are not rounded; final displays round to cents. This is not a product comparison or recommendation.

A practical starting point

  1. Keep assumptions, units and time periods explicit.
  2. Use hypothetical, non-identifying values, never client records.
  3. Treat calculations as illustrations, not forecasts or recommendations.
